11-9 victory over Cal St. Channel Islands
11-9 stood the final score. Occidental over Cal State Channel Islands, but the sweat laden field in Camarillo, California told a much more-detailed version of the hard-fought match that had just unfolded. In a game riddled with penalties, a late 4th-quarter push by Channel Islands was only barely held off by Occidental. Goals by Doug Calder (#22) and Vincent Vigorita (#12) gave Occidental a quick 2-0 lead, which just as speedily returned to a 2-2 tie as Channel Island's retaliated. Continuing to trade goals into the second quarter, Occidental finished the second half with a one goal lead. The tigers pushed further ahead in the 2nd half and lead 10-5 early in the 4th quarter. However, Channel Islands wasn't going down easily. Lead by #4, Taylor LaPlant, CSCI battled back to within 2. Nevertheless, multiple strong defensive stands and excellent goalkeeping by Occidental Goalie #14, Thomas Kelly, prevented CSCI from bringing the score any closer as Occidental held on to win 9-11. Now 2-0 within their division and overall, Occidental looks ahead to Marymount next weekend and to their next in-conference game against Cal Lutheran on Febuary 25th.
