Four Tigers Named SCIAC Athletes of the Week

LOS ANGELES — Occidental Athletics had a big week, placing four athletes on the SCIAC Athlete of the Week list.

The 12-3 Oxy baseball team led the way with Reid Gibbs named the SCIAC Player of the Week and Nolan McCarthy the SCIAC Pitcher of the Week.

Alessandra Pelliccia earned SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week in women's lacrosse and Armand Harvey earned SCIAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week.

Gibbs, Oxy's second baseman, extended his hitting streak to nine games with another big-time performance at the plate, going 4 for 5 as the Tigers completed a sweep of Whittier. His batting average is up to .449 and he has 17 hits in his last 28 at bats.

McCarthy continued his dominance on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout against Whittier last Friday. He struck out nine batters, and gave up just three hits and one walk in nine outstanding innings pitched. The 6-foot-5 righty has been about as good as you can be through 26 innings this season with 32 strikeouts and just four walks, and an ERA of 1.38.

Pelliccia is lighting up the stat sheet and other teams' defenses. The junior from McLean, Va. scored 12 goals in two wins on the week, upping her SCIAC-best total to 21. Her best game was an eight-goal performance at Whittier.

Harvey won the javelin competition at the Oxy Distance and Sprints Carnival on Saturday with a best of 168-06.
