Oxy Baseball Opens Season 3-0

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental baseball team made it a weekend sweep of two teams from the Northwest Conference with a 9-5 win over Willamette at Anderson Field on Sunday.

The Tigers won two games by a combined score of 20-5 the day before over Puget Sound.

Oxy trailed 3-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning when it posted eight runs to blow the game wide open. Oxy loaded the bases, earned a handful of free bases and runs on walks and then several players got big hits to bring runners in. Antonio Andrade, who went 2 for 5 on the day, had the first one, and then Michael Netzel, Josh Rego and Preston Chong all had knocks.

Netzel was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Will Martel pitched five innings, giving up just one earned run for the victory. Tom Butler came in for the final four innings to earn the save, throwing hard and by the Willamette hitters for nine strikeouts and one earned run.

Next Game: Oxy is back in action at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next weekend.
