LOS ANGELES — Zach Baines scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Ryan Kaneshiro scored 12 points and pulled down eight boards and the Occidental men's basketball team gave nationally-ranked NAIA Division I Westmont a run for its money in an exhibition game on Saturday.
But despite leading for most of the game, the Tigers couldn't hang on for the upset, falling 69-62 at Rush Gym.
Oxy played hard on defense, moved the ball well and ran the court to offense and defense.
The Tigers had assists on 17 baskets, led by Kaneshiro who had five and sophomore point guard Isaiah De La Fuente, who had four.
Oxy cut Westmont's lead to 63-60 with 41 seconds left on a three by De La Fuente, but the Warriors made free throws to seal the game.
Austin DeWitz had nine points, eight rebounds and three assists for Oxy. First year Tyler Sweeney gave the Tigers a few bursts off the bench, scoring eight points while showing off his athleticism by the rim, and Oliver Xu scored five points.
Oxy gave up nine offensive rebounds against the big and physical Warriors.
