Yellin-Flaherty, Tigers Pound Boards in Win

LOS ANGELESCaleb Yellin-Flaherty led four Oxy players with double-digit rebounds with 25 points and 11 boards, Jacob Adler got hot off the bench and Ryan Kaneshiro was solid all game as the Oxy men's basketball team ran away from Whittier 86-72 at Rush Gym on Sunday.

Yellin-Flaherty got himself into good spots on offense by moving without the ball and grabbing seven offense rebounds. He finished the game 9 for 16 from the field and 6 for 8 from the free throw line.

Adler was a spark off the bench with solid defense and hot shooting. The sophomore scored 18 points on 6 for 13 shooting, including 4 for 9 from the 3-point line, in 32 minutes.

Kaneshiro was strong with the ball and a wall against it on defense, finishing with six points, 11 rebounds, including nine at the defensive end of the court, eight assists and just one turnover.

Austin DeWitz added 19 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and Zach Baines scored 10 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had three blocks. DeWitz was steady handling the ball in the middle of Whittier's press and zone, and Baines overcame a subpar shooting performance by defending and rebounding.

Oxy was able to force tough shots, holding Whittier to just 30 percent shooting on the game.

Whittier did its damage from the free throw line after taking the ball to the basket, going 26-33.

The Tigers jumped out to a 46-29 lead by halftime and led by as many as 23 points at two different periods in the second half.

Oxy won the battle on the boards by a wide 56-38 margin, but still gave up 14 offensive rebounds.

On the other end of the court, the Tigers were even harder to keep off the glass, grabbing 25 offensive rebounds.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play.

Whittier falls to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC play. The Poets have played a mostly challenging road schedule against good opponents from the Northwest and in Denver.

Next Game: The Tigers have two remaining non-conference home games before breaking for the holiday, against Principia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Pacific (Ore.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Tigers will then play UC Santa Cruz on Dec. 28 and return to SCIAC play against Chapman at home on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
