Chapman Edges Oxy in SCIAC Championship

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's soccer team came up a little short in its quest to be the first Oxy squad in program history to win the SCIAC Tournament Championship and advance to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Tobi Howe scored the game's only goal in th 15th minute and the Tigers fell to the Panthers 1-0 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday night.

Howe received a good cross from Zack Matteoni and headed it back against the grain, near post, for the score. 

Oxy had chances throughout the game, but didn't find the goal it needed to extend the game.

It's a bittersweet ending for the Tigers, who finish their outstanding season with a record of 14-6 overall and are the first Oxy squad to advance to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Final.

Oxy was also one win away from clinching a share of its first SCIAC regular season championship when it fell 1-0 in 2OT to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Oct. 27.

Chapman secures the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

Oxy's best chance came to equalize came in the 86th minute. Matthew Labrie put the ball in the back of the net off a throw in, but the Tigers were whistled for offsides.

1st Half Chances

Tobi Howe had the first good opportunity of the game for either team in the 8th minute after a free kick, but his shot from just in front of the goal was saved nicely by Scott Drazan.

Oxy's first chance came just moments later. Liam Walsh made a good move up the sideline and played a ball into the box to Sean Kim in front of the goal, but it was just out of his reach.

Oxy's Riley McCabe hit a good free kick to Liam Walsh for a header in the 14th minute.

Ben Simon had a free kick saved in the 42nd minute from 25 yards out for the Tigers. 

2nd Half Chances

Liam Walsh fired a rocket shot off of the Chapman goalkeeper in the 59th minute. It bounced free and Sean Kim charged after it, but he couldn't beat the keeper back to the ball.

Matthew Teplitz had a chance on a counter attack that sailed high of the goal in the 70th minute. 

Adrian Paredes had a look at the goal that was saved in the 87th minute.
