Athenas, Stags swim past Tigers


CLAREMONT, Calif. (Jan. 23, 2010) – Against the undefeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams, the Occidental College teams turned in a number of decent swims and earned a few first place finishes, but were out numbered and out scored by the Athenas and Stags, 169-68 and 176.5-58.5, respectively today on the road.

Sarah Sharpe took top honors on the three meter diving board, winning by 23 points with a score of 234.21. She and teammate Marisa Pulcrano placed 2-3 on the one meter board with Pulcrano earning second place points after scoring a 199.5.

The women also swept the 200 butterfly, with Alena Morris winning the event in 2:23.42 followed by Mili Kale (2:33.59) and Audrey Akcasu (2:39.99).

Freshman Lauren Howarth was third in both the 50 and 100 free while Sara Mendoza and Sara Damore were third in the 1650 and 200 back, respectively.

The Tigers’ 400 free relay team of Howarth, Morris, Mendoza and Danielle Garcia joined forces to place second.

On the men’s side, senior Adam Kantor continues to lead the pack, swimming to a top finish in the 100 free with a time of 49.60, out-touching CMS’s Jeff McNerney by seven hundredths of a second for the win. Kantor also tied for second in the 50 free, clocking in at 24.45.

Jeven Dovey turned in the final win of the meet for the Black and Orange when he handedly won the 200 breaststroke by five seconds at 2:20.39. 

Freshman Stephen Ratkovich was second in the 200 backstroke (2:12.36) and Zach Condon was second in the 500 free (5:06.41). Austen Oliver scored third place points in both the 1650 and 200 fly.

Oxy placed second in the men’s 400 Medley Relay as Condon, Dovey, Kantor and Ross Miner combined to swim the event in 3:45.36, outs-swum by CMS by .28 seconds, and were just ahead of CMS’s other team by .12 seconds.

The Tigers will jump back in the pool on Saturday, Jan. 30 when they travel to Pasadena, Calif. to face off with the Beavers in another SCIAC meet. Diving will begin at 10:30 a.m. before swimming events get under way at 11:00 a.m.
