Tigers Open the Season with a Commanding Victory
GLENDALE, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2010) - The black and orange opened the 2010 season with a dominating 8-1 win over Glendale Community College. The Michael Guice era of Oxy tennis began with five straight victories, before the Vaqueros broke through in singles, only to watch the visiting Tigers sweep the final three matches.
The Tigers dominated the final two doubles matches, but not before seniors Victor Sowers and Chris Wan opened up their final campaign with a 9-7 victory to start the day. Setting the stage for freshmen Stephen Perkins and Spencer Choy, to begin their Oxy careers, with an easy 8-1 win and the Tigers never looked back.
Glendale did make it interesting, as Sowers had to go to a third set tiebreaker to squeak out a win at the number two singles position, while Ben Harrington-Gilmore was not as fortunate, falling in straight sets. Oxy responded by running away with the final three singles matches by a combined score of 36-12.
Next up for Occidental (1-0) will be the conference opener as the men will head to Redlands for a SCIAC dual match. First serve is set for 9:30am with on Saturday, Feb 13th, at the University of Redlands.
