Zhao clinches win at No. 6, Tigers beat Connecticut College

LOS ANGELES — Rocking their usual baseball hats, Josh Dancu (Maples, Fla.) and Jordan Brown (San Diego) both earned singles wins and teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles, leading the Occidental College men's tennis team to its first victory of the season over Connecticut College 6-3 at Scholl Canyon on Sunday.

Dancu defeated Joshua Suneby at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, improving to 3-1 as Oxy's No. 1 player this season. Brown beat Jonathan Deeter 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.

Together they improved to 2-2 as a doubles team, beating Deeter and Jonathan Kraiger 8-5.

Oxy's Kevin Zhao (Sammamish, Wash.) clinched the match with a tightly-contested singles win at No. 6, beating Henry Tittmann 6-4, 7-6 (10-7).

"Our guys competed hard all day," Occidental coach Brian Newhall said. "We were two very evenly-matched teams. Dancu and Brown both played outstanding tennis and Zhao came through when we needed him."

Jamie Grossman (Tiburon) also was involved in a pair of wins, beating Huan Nguyen at No. 5 singles and teaming up with Stephen Perkins (Seattle, Wash.) for a win at No. 2 doubles.

The Tigers face Hardin-Simmons on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Pomona-Pitzer.
