Dancu Earns Huge Singles Win, Oxy Nearly Upsets No. 20 Cal Lu

LOS ANGELESJosh Dancu is on a roll and he's knocking off some serious competition.

The 2014 First Team All-SCIAC selection earned his third No. 1 singles victory in a row, defeating West Region No. 9 Moises Cardenas at Scholl Canyon on Saturday for the biggest win of his career and one of the biggest Oxy men's tennis victories in ages.

"Josh played outstanding tennis from start to finish and he pulled off the best win for an Oxy player in the past 30 years," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "Cardenas is an outstanding player who is having a great season. Josh steadied up and moved exceptionally well throughout the match."

Cardenas finished 2014 as the No. 14 player in the nation and the No. 5 player in the West Region.

Dancu, who's already beaten No. 1 players from Caltech and Chapman, took down Cardenas 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

The Oxy men's tennis team had No. 20 Cal Lutheran on the ropes, tied 3-3 after singles, but dropped all three doubles matches to lose to the Kingsmen, 6-3.

The singles were played first in an attempt to avoid possible rain.

Avery Chernin won at No. 3 singles, beating Fergus Scott 6-3, 6-1 and Jesse Kreger won at No. 6 singles against Jesper Lunding-Johansson, 6-1, 5-7, 10-5.

Next Match: The Tigers face a tough Christopher Newport team on Sunday at 4 p.m.
