Dancu Wins With Late Rally, Oxy Falls to Salisbury

LOS ANGELESJosh Dancu rallied after losing the first set and falling behind 3-0 in the second, beating Daniel Albers at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 7-5, 10-1.

The Occidental men's tennis team fell to Salisbury, the No. 9-ranked team in the ITA Atlantic South Region, 8-1 at Scholl Canyon on Monday.

Dancu looked off his game through the first half of his match. But he quickly recovered and put on a dominating display in the tiebreaker, improving his season record to 6-2.

"I was getting too worried about every point that didn't go my way early on," said Dancu, a senior and 2014 First Team All-SCIAC performer. "I just told myself this is my senior year and to have fun. I was finally able to relax and start playing much better tennis."

Avery Chernin was edged in a dramatic No. 3 singles battle by Demetri Vrahnos, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Overall Record: Oxy falls to 3-5. Salisbury improves to 7-1.

Record Against Non-SCIAC Opponents: Oxy, which plays in maybe the best men's tennis conference in the country, is now 2-2 in non-conference play. A total of six SCIAC schools are ranked in the ITA National Top 40.

Regional Ranking: The Tigers are currently ranked No. 14 in the ITA West Region rankings.

Next Match: The Tigers return to action against George Fox on Friday at Scholl Canyon at 3:30 p.m. Oxy has four more non-conference matches before returning to SCIAC play at Redlands on March 27 at 2 p.m.
