Manasse, Tigers Earn First Win

Manasse, Tigers Earn First Win

LOS ANGELES — For the first time since 2015, the Occidental men's tennis team swept an opponent 9-0, winning at Glendale College on Friday in its season opener.

It's the first career victory for first year head men's and women's tennis coach Rachel Manasse.

"It's very exciting and I'm very proud of the men in how well they prepared," Manasse said. "They went in with a purpose and played with a purpose so it was great to see their hard work translate."

The last time the Tigers swept a team was when senior Isa Kibira was playing No. 6 against Willamette and now assistant coach Josh Dancu was playing No. 1 singles.

"That was kind of fun to see Isa get his first sweep in a while and Josh to get his first sweep as a coach," Manasse said.

Oxy looked like a cohesive unit with good chemistry in warm ups all the way through the end of the match.

Lucas Chmielewski, a first year from Pasadena, had a solid outing with his effortless-looking and clean style of play that Manasse says makes him a challenge to play against.

The group battled through some early nerves to play much better in their second sets, especially in the top half of the lineup.

Isaiah Bird led Oxy as its No. 1.

Vinny Bartholomew and Kibiria both won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and 5, respectively.

Manasse comes to Oxy from rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps where she had incredible success as an assistant for the women's team. During her time at with the Atheans, they went 75-9 overall, 31-1 in SCIAC play, won three SCIAC Championships and advanced deep into the NCAA tournament in all three seasons, including a pair of semifinals appearances and a third-place finish in 2014-15.

Oxy is back in action on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer at 3 p.m.
