LOS ANGELES — In a critical conference match that could have playoff implications later, the Occidental men's tennis team got its first win of 2019 with a 6-3 victory over Cal Lutheran at Scholl Canyon on Sunday.
Its one of the program's best conference victories in the last 10 years.
Morison, playing his first match of the year, showed no signs of nerves, beating Sebastian Ariza 7-5, 6-0.
Shortly after, Anderson decided the match for the Tigers, finishing off Aaron Morylan 6-2, 7-5. Anderson got the break of serve late in the second set at 5-5 before serving it out in convincing fashion.
Joseph Schwarz continued his strong singles play with a one-sided 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles over Mike Sulahian.
In his first singles match of the year, sophomore standout Lucas Chmielewski picked up right where he left off, defeating Jake Haffner 6-1, 6-4. Chmielewski was an All-SCIAC selection in his rookie season and is one of the best young players in the West Region.
In the longest match of the day and only three-setter, first year David Zhang continued his winning ways, rallying from a set down to eventually prevail 4-6, 6-4, 11-9.
Oxy's No. 1 doubles team of Cameron Coe and Lucas Chmielewski defeated Yahn Gawrit and Isaiah Volk 8-6. Coe and Chmielewski surrendered a two-break lead before rallying again at 5-5 to regain the break advantage and eventually serving out the match.
Oxy's No. 2 doubles team of Zhang and Schwarcz weren't so fortunate also with an early break lead before losing that advantage and dropping the point in a tiebreaker, 8-7.
Season Impact: Tigers improve to 1-2 and 1-1 in the SCIAC.
