Oxy Track and Field Early Season Highlights

CLAREMONT — The Occidental men's and women's track and field teams have a few meets under their belts and are all set for their first SCIAC competition this Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Oxy this weekend. 

Women's Early Season Highlights

Sophomore LaShauna Porter had an excellent seasonal opener in the 100m with a time of 12.58.  

Junior Allison Kilday started off her 400 hurdles campaign on a high note with a time of 65.25 that is just a touch off of her lifetime best. 

In the distance events, Oxy had three outstanding performances in the 3000 meters from junior Aria Blumm, sophomore Sabrina Thurber, and first year Kayla Lim, who all finished with lifetime bests at 10:33.98, 10:42.65, and 10:52.56, respectively. 

Junior Cora Davies Cora started her high jump season out by clearing 5' 3.75", which moves her to the number 3 spot on the school's top ten performance list.

 In the triple jump, sophomore Lena Etoka opened her season with a mark of 35' 6".

Men's Early Season Highlights 

Senior Hugh Pegan, coming off a late start due to a mild injury, opened his 100m with the time of 11.04 and a 4x400 split of 49.7.  

First year Charles Marks has had a tremendous start to his Oxy career in the 4x400 relay with an opening leg in the 4x400 of 49.8. 

Junior Rio Chiba has had some excellent performances in the 4x400 relays as well with a split time of 49.6. 

In the distance events, junior Brody Barkan has had a fast start to his season with a time of 8:42.47 in the 3000m. Senior Austin Sankaran has also had a fast start with a time of 8:54.44.  

Throwers have shown great promise led by the efforts of some talented first years. Jesse Nikora has consistently PR'ed in the hammer with a current mark of 143' 4", and Ibrahim Finch has made a good adjustment to the college discus with a current mark of 123' 5".

From the Coach: "Each meet so far in 2018 has been better than the last, and we're happy with where the team is early in the season," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "Saturday, was our last meet before we start the SCIAC scoring portion of our season and we're excited to see how the team steps up in scored competition this weekend against Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps."
