LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's softball team opened its 2017 season with a doubleheader against Whitworth of the Northwest Conference at Bell Field on Sunday.
The Tigers fell 2-0 in the first game and 4-2 in the second.
Season impact: Oxy opens the season 0-2.
Whitworth, which already split with SCIAC teams Redlands and La Verne, moves to 4-2.
Game 1: Whitworth 2, Occidental 0
Whitworth starter Madi Perez was outstanding in the circle, pitching a shutout in all seven innings. She struck out two, had no walks and allowed just four hits.
Her counterpart and Oxy sophomore starter Madi Romero, was also good, throwing six innings with two earned runs, five hits and a walk.
Whitworth broke a 0-0 tie in the sixth inning when Michelle Silva singled in Shannon Wessle and then Tessa Matthews doubled in Silva.
Game 2: Whitworth 4, Occidental 2
Oxy took an early lead, but let it slip away after a sixth-inning Whitworth rally for the second game in a row.
The Tigers scored one run in the first and another in the fifth.
Whitworth added an insurance home run off the bat of Wessel in the seventh.
