CLAREMONT, Calif. – Occidental roared to a 42-17 halftime lead before cruising to an 88-42 victory over Pomona Pitzer tonight in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.
The Tigers defense was tough again, surrendering just 11 baskets on the night, while holding the Sagehens to 28.9% shooting from the field. The Black and Orange forced 29 turnovers, led by Marquisha Corley who picked up a game high five steals, as Oxy combined for 20 thefts on the evening.
Occidental also won the battle of the boards, hauling in 42 rebounds to just 19 by the home squad. Eleven different players recorded at least one rebound, with Makenzie Brandon leading the way with 10.
The most impressive stat of the ballgame was the three point shooting of the Tigers, as they finished the game shooting 76.9% (10-13) from behind the arc. Eight different players knocked in at least one triple.
All 15 players for Oxy saw the floor tonight, with 12 players logging double digit minutes.
Brandon led the Tigers attack with 14 points, 10 assists and 10 boards, recording her first career triple double. Oxy was efficient again on the offensive end of the floor, handing out 25 dimes on 32 field goals. Stephanie Scamman was the only other double digit scorer, finishing with 11 points. Liz Little and Kendra Carter chipped in with eight points apiece.
The Sagehens (4-18, 2-9) were led by Emily Van Gulik, who recorded a double double (15 points and 10 rebounds), and 11 points from Emi Hashizume.
With the win Oxy (14-8, 9-2) now is in sole possession of first place after Cal Lutheran's (12-10, 6-5) win over the University of Redlands (14-8, 8-3) tonight in Thousand Oaks. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (17-5, 7-4) is now in third place with Cal Lu, Whittier College and La Verne all tied at 6-5 for that fourth and final playoff spot.
The Tigers return home to take on Whittier College (12-10, 6-5) on Thursday, February 17th, with tip off scheduled for 7:30pm.
