LOS ANGELES, Calif. (Nov. 28, 2010) – On day two of the Occidental-Caltech Thanksgiving Classic the Dominican University Stars and host Tigers were victorious defeating Caltech, 71-50, and Ohio Wesleyan, 64-58, respectively at Rush Gymnasium on the campus of Occidental College.
The score was tied five times early on but Occidental used a 10-0 run to break a 14-14 tie 13 minutes into regulation and never looked back. The Tigers shot 43 percent from the field and led by as many as 16 during the opening half as they took a 39-24 lead into the locker room.
In the second stanza, the Black and Orange came out hot, pushing that lead to 19 in the first three minute of the period, but Ohio Wesleyan was not going away quickly. The Battling Bishops chipped away at the deficit, knocking down 8-for-10 free-throw chances from a trio of players to pull the game to seven points with 11:49 remaining.
After exchanging baskets late in the half OWU continued to control their fate at the charity stripe, putting in 4-for-4 in the final 1:14, but the late come-back effort fell short, as Occidental earned its second victory of the season.
The Tigers looked to senior Stephanie Babij for the second straight night as she turned in her first double-double of the season with 13 rebounds and 10 points. Sophomore Makenzie Brandon posted her fourth double figure scoring effort in five games this winter, chipping in with 15, adding a game-high six assists. Also surpassing the double digit mark today was Laura Mohler who put up 11 points on 6-for-7 shooting from the charity stripe.
On the glass, Occidental held a 48-46 edge, although Ohio Wesleyan grabbed 16 offensive boards to the Tigers' 12. PWU used those second chances to score 15 points as Oxy converted their second opportunities into just five. Babij led all players followed by Michelle Lo who grabbed nine boards, four offensive, and was a point away from joining her teammate with a double-double.
Occidental (2-3) was tough inside tonight, scoring 30 of their 64 points in the paint. The Tigers' defense held the Battling Bishops to just 14 points in the paint, allowing only four in the final half. Defensively, Oxy got three blocks apiece from Babij and Katelyn Rowe as Lo added a pair and came away with two steals.
Ohio Wesleyan (3-3) had the leading scorer today as Pam Quigley scored 20 points (6-for-6 at the line). Teammate Kayla Gordon poured in 18 (6-for-7 at the line). Each came away with nine rebounds today as well.
In game one Caltech opened a 7-2 lead to start off the contest, but the Stars used a 10-0 run to take control of the game as they cruised to the 71-50 victory after leading 30-20 at the intermission.
Dominican looked to Sarah Budz for a team-high 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting with six assists while Becky Christofferson finished with 12, 10 of which came in the first half, two via long balls.
Caltech (0-5) was led by Krissy Dalh who posted game highs with both 14 points and eight rebounds for the Beavers. The CIT junior added a game leading four blocks as well.
Dominican (4-2) shot at a 42 percent clip, while the Beavers recovered from a first half lull by shooting 44 percent over the final stanza to finish the day at 37 percent from the field. DU pulled down 46 rebounds, 17 coming on the offensive end of the court with Budz leading the squad with seven. Caltech came down with 37 overall, 11 offensive.
