LOS ANGELES — If the Occidental College women's lacrosse team was disappointed about starting out its much-anticipated 2013 season with a loss at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the feeling certainly didn't last long.
One game after a heartbreaking 11-10 loss at CMS, the Tigers (1-1, 1-1 SCIAC) rebounded with authority, beating Whittier 20-3 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday in the team's home opener.
Tori Larson (Denver, Colo.) and Isabel Osgood-Roach (Portand, Ore.) each had a game-high five goals and Oxy freshman Mackenzie Wright (Annandale, Va.) added three as the Tigers picked apart the Poets (0-2, 0-2 SCIAC) for their first victory of the season.
The Tigers held Whittier without a goal until Shaina Denny got the Poets on the board with 2:32 left in the first half. Oxy's stingy defense ramped back up until Denny added two more goals in the last 1:10 of the game.
Oxy dominated possession, controlling 18 draws to Whittier's seven, while picking up 21 ground balls to the Poets' 16.
Oxy freshman goalie Kirsten Hee (Vancouver, Wash.) made five saves in her first start, and second appearance.
The Tigers are back in action on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer at 2 p.m.
