Belding leads Oxy in non-conference routBy Michael Wells Sports Information Director
LOS ANGELES — Rebecca Belding (Burlingame) scored a game-high four goals, Kirsten Hee (Vancouver, Wash.) made eight saves and the Occidental College women's lacrosse team dominated after a shaky first 15 minutes, beating Augustana (IL) 16-4 at Jack Kemp Stadium in the team's first non-conference game of the season.
Belding and Tori Larson (Denver, Colo.) each had a pair of goals during a 6-0 run that lasted the last 10 minutes of the first half, and then Belding put in two more during a 7-0 second-half stretch to close the game.
Oxy fell behind 2-0 and didn't score until Haley Gandsey (Oakland) found Lauren Wemple (Needham, Mass.) with 16:47 left in the first. Behind two goals from Emily Pavlik and one from Christina Letmanski, the Vikings led 3-2 up until Larson started Oxy's first-half run with a goal in transition to tie the game at three with 9:57 on the clock.
Charlotte Bromley (Watertown, Conn.) had a game-high six ground balls and Feinberg snatched up five.
Gandsey finished with three goals, Larson had three and Wemple had a goal and two assists.
Nattali Shelton scored Augustana's only second-half goal with 27:55 on the clock.
It was a physical game on both sides. Belding, Gandsey and Mary Richardson (Marblehead, Mass.) all received yellow cards for the Tigers (3-2) and Letmanski, Cori Duncan and Kelly Molloy were call cautioned for the Vikings (0-1).
Oxy heads to Chapman for an important SCIAC game on March 1 before taking the rest of March off from conference play to compete against teams visiting California from colder climates.
