Oxy women's lax earns key conference win over CMSBy Michael Wells Sports Information Director
LOS ANGELES – Like any good facilitator, Lauren Wemple (Needham, Mass.) spread the ball around.
The senior attack for the Occidental College women's lacrosse team matched her own single-game Oxy assist record, finding three different players for a total of five – all in the first half – and the Tigers picked up an important SCIAC win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 11-6 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.
Oxy (6-7, 4-2 SCIAC) is just one game back of Redlands (9-4, 5-1 SCIAC) for first place in the standings.
The Tigers avenged a previous loss to CMS (6-8, 2-5 SCIAC), 11-10, in their season opener in Claremont on Feb. 9.
Wemple tied an assist mark that both she and Beebe Finch Sanders (Berkeley) have each hit once. Wemple recorded five assists last season against North Central (Ill.) and Finch Sanders had five against St. John Fisher earlier this year.
Wemple was composed and alert, playing from behind the cage. She setup Rebecca Belding (Burlingame) three times, and Isabel Osgood-Roach (Portland, Ore.) and Finch Sanders once each. She also scored Oxy's last goal with 8:40 left.
Oxy led 8-4 by the half and was able to maintain possession and stall for a good portion of the second. At one point, the Tigers ran off more than 6 minutes – from 27:03 to 20:59.
Led by Kristen Feinberg (Haverfor, Pa.) and Monica Rosenkranz (Menlo Park), the Tigers defense didn't allow a goal in the second half until Madi Shove scored her only goal of the game with 4:35 on the clock.
Feinberg had a team-high five ground balls.
Izzy Laterzo and Christina Sutherland led CMS with two goals each.
The Tigers hit the road to play at Whittier on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
