Oxy women's lax stays in second with win at Whittier

WHITTIER -- Rebecca Belding (Burlingame) and Beebe Finch Sanders (Berkeley) each scored a team-high three goals, leading the Occidental College women's lacrosse team to a 13-9 win at Whittier on Wednesday despite starting in a 3-0 hole.

The victory is Oxy's fourth SCIAC win in a row and it keeps the Tigers (7-7, 5-2 SCIAC) in control of their own destiny in the standings. Oxy can setup a first-place showdown at Redlands (11-4, 7-1 SCIAC) on April 18 with a win over Pomona-Pitzer (8-6, 3-4 SCIAC) at Jack Kemp Stadium this Saturday.

The Tigers are currently tied for second with Chapman (11-3, 5-2 SCIAC).

Whittier scored the first three goals of the game and held Oxy scoreless until Lauren Wemple (Needham, Mass.) found Isabel Osgood-Roach (Portland, Ore.) for the Tigers first goal 8 minutes into the game. Oxy chipped away at the Poets lead and went into halftime trailing 6-5.

In the second half, Oxy took an 8-7 lead on a free position goal by Tori Larson (Denver, Colo.) and Finch Sanders added two insurance goals soon after, as the Tigers outscored Whittier 8-3 in the period to pick up their second road win of the season.

Alida Beck (Portland, Ore.) tallied a team-high four ground balls for Oxy. Haley Gandsey (Oakland) and Charlotte Bromley (Watertown, Conn.) caused three turnovers each.

Shaina Denny scored a game-high four goals for the Poets.

Oxy faces Pomona-Pitzer at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Tigers Purple Game, a campaign spearheaded by Wemple to raise awareness and money to fight epilepsy. Read more about Wemple's story and the game here.
