CLAREMONT — It took the Tigers a few minutes to get started, but once they did they showed why they've opened the SCIAC season without a blemish.
After beginning the game in a 2-0 hole in the first 2 minutes, Alida Beck and the Occidental women's lacrosse team rallied, going on an 8-1 run over the next 30 minutes to cruise past Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 12-9 at Zinda Field on Wednesday.
Oxy improves to 5-0 overall and 5-0 in SCIAC — the best start in the program's young history — with one round of conference play in the books.
CMS falls to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in conference.
Beck, who's broken out this season as Oxy's leading scorer, put away a game-high four goals, upping her season total to 18.
Following Oxy's prolonged run, the Athenas were able to cut Oxy's lead to 10-8 with 8 minutes left on a goal by Anthea Weixel. But Beebe Finch Sanders answered with a free-position goal, bumping Oxy's lead back to three, and Rebecca Belding added another goal moments later. From there, Oxy was able to maintain most of the possession and milk the last 5:47 off the clock.
Belding, Finch Sanders and Mackenzie Wright finished with two goals each.
Brita Loeb and Sanders dominated the draw for Oxy, controlling 13 between them.
Weixel led the Athenas with four goals and Izzy Laterzo and Cara Cancelmo each added two.
Oxy now has a string of non-conference home games before beginning the second round of SCIAC play in April. The Tigers host Saint Joseph's (Me.) on March 11 at 11 a.m.
