Oxy Wins Regular Season Finale, Tied for First

WHITTIERTori Larson and Rebecca Belding each scored four goals as the Occidental women's lacrosse team finished the regular season with a 10-8 win at Whittier on Saturday.

Oxy is in a three-way tie for first place in the SCIAC standings with Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands at 8-2. Based on tiebreakers, the Tigers will be the No. 3 seed in the SCIAC Championship tournament and host Whittier in the first round on April 23 at 7 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium.

It will be the second time Oxy faces the Poets in less than a week and the third time they face them this season.

The Tigers took Whittier's best shot in the first half as the Poets rode the momentum of senior day to take a 5-4 lead into halftime. Whittier scored on three free positions in the first half and was able to create nine eight-meter opportunities to Oxy's four on the game.

In the second half, after a pep talk from Larson and Belding, the Tigers found their rhythm on offense. First Mackenzie Wright hit Belding for a goal, then Beebe Finch Sanders scored, Larson added back-to-back goals and Belding scored again, capping a 5-0 run that lasted more than 17 minutes.

Meanwhile, Oxy's defense, anchored by Emily Fowler, kept the Poets from getting any offense going. When the Poets did get opportunities Oxy goalie Kirsten Hee came up with clutch saves, totaling six on the game six on the game.

Whittier cut the Oxy lead to two with 5:11 left, but couldn't get any closer.
