Oxy Women's Soccer Loses Early Lead at Whittier

WHITTIER – Elissa Minamishin fired the opening salvo against Whittier, but the Occidental College women's soccer team allowed three consecutive goals to Madison Shipherd in the first half as they fell 3-1 on Saturday night.

In the 8th minute, Michaela Tsuha released Minamishin for a clear scoring opportunity and Minamishin calmly put it past Whittier goalkeeper Shanna Falch to give the Tigers (3-6-2, 2-5-1 SCIAC) an early lead.

Minamishin now has five goals on the season.

Whittier (1-12, 1-7 SCIAC) answered in the 21st minute when Shipherd was able to put a header past Oxy goalie Tayler Renshaw on a corner kick from Courtney Maddux for her first goal of the game. In the 30th minute, Shipherd whipped a free kick from top of the box for her second score of the game and completed the hat trick just two minutes later with a midrange shot from a lofted through ball from Rose Marie Orlando.

Oxy ramped up the pressure and kept most of the ball in the second half, outshooting Whittier 11-0 and forcing Falch to make difficult saves, but could not find the clinical touch.

Kylie Takafuji, Abigail Mitchell and Tsuha combined for 11 total shots, five of them on goal.

Renshaw made three saves.

The Tigers return home on Wednesday to face Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium.
