Oxy Honors Seniors in Close Loss

LOS ANGELES — Freshman Julie Khil came up with another veteran clutch goal.

But her second-half equalizer wasn't enough in the Occidental College women's soccer team's 2-1 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday.

Oxy falls to 4-10-2 overall and 3-8-1 in SCIAC play. CMS improves to 7-8-3 and 6-5-2.

Khil found the back of the net in the 60th minute on a pass from Elissa Minamishin, tying the game at one. Khil controlled the bouncing through ball and with CMS goalkeeper Hannah Dunham off of her line, hit a left-footed volley into the empty net.

Minamishin nearly tied the game moments before on a free kick that drilled the cross bar. But her miss and active play on offense sparked Khil's next run.

The Tigers weren't even for long. In the 68th minute Isabel Lester finished a cross from Laura Hayward for the game-winning goal.

It is the ninth game Oxy has lost by one goal this season.

CMS' Lauren Phillips gave the Athenas an early lead in the 2nd minute, sliding a breakaway shot past Oxy keeper Tayler Renshaw.

Following CMS' opening goal, Oxy spent a good portion of first half on the Athenas side of the field, but without many clear opportunities to show for it. Anytime the Tigers looked to get something going, CMS was able to clear or gain possession of the ball before the chance developed into much.

CMS nearly took a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute, but Elizabeth Augustine's header sailed just wide right.

Oxy had its best chances of the first half right before the break. Minamishin forced Hannah Dunham to make a diving save that went over the goal line for a corner kick. Minamishin's ensuing cross on the corner found Stephanie Welty's head, but her header was just a foot or two above the cross bar.

Minamishin and Renshaw were honored with a brief pregame ceremony as the team's two graduating seniors playing in their last home game. Renshaw has been a three-year starter in goal for Oxy and Minamishin has been an All-SCIAC forward and one of Oxy's go-to offensive weapons. She's scored 27 goals in her career.

Oxy finishes the season on Saturday at Redlands at 7 p.m.
