LOS ANGELES — Elleni Bekele scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute as the Occidental women's soccer team beat La Verne 1-0 in OT at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday.
Meredith Cook rebounded a deflected Oxy shot, crossed the ball and found Bekele, who knocked it in, sending Oxy home in walk-off fashion.
The Tigers remain undefeated on the season and move into first place in the SCIAC with the victory.
Bekele has scored four goals in her last three games.
The goal seemed inevitable, but impossible at the same time after the Tigers hit every part of the goal throughout the game besides the back of the net. Isabelle Bonomi hit the cross bar with two set pieces in the first half, Nicole Castro hit the left post with a line drive in the 61st minute and Bekele hit the right post with a header in the 71st minute on a pass from Caroline Kearney.
Jasmine Davis also had a chance to score, hitting a hard shot that was saved in the 46th minute on a headed pass from Bekele on a throw in.
La Verne's most threatening offense came at the beginning of both halves. The Leopards had a couple of corners in the first half and spent some time in Oxy territory early in the second half.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 5-0-2 and 4-0-2 in SCIAC.
La Verne falls to 0-7-2 and 0-6-1.
Next Match: Oxy is back in action against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Jack Kemp Stadium.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
