OXY'S NO. 1 DOUBLES STILL UNDEFEATED, TIGERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHTBy Michael Wells Sports Information Director
LOS ANGELES — Krishnaveni Subbiah (Beaverton, Ore.) and Rachel Buckner (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) kept their undefeated streak at No. 1 doubles alive, improving to 9-0 on the season, and the Occidental College women's tennis team moved to better than .500 for the second time this year with a definitive 8-1 victory over Pacific Lutheran at Scholl Canyon on Wednesday.
Subbiah and Buckner beat Loah Newell and Tina Aarsvold 8-3 and the Tigers (5-4) as a team swept the doubles.
The only match Oxy dropped was the No. 2 doubles. Newell beat Buckner 6-2, 6-3.
Subbiah, also Oxy's No. 1 singles, beat Cora Wigen 6-2, 6-4, making it an even 4-4 on the season for the senior in that spot.
Riding a three-match winning streak, the Tigers dive into a tough SCIAC schedule beginning with Redlands at Scholl Canyon on Friday at 2 p.m.
"This (win) and the last couple of matches have given us a boost going into SCIAC this weekend," Occidental coach Jeffrey Normile said. "I think we're mentally up for the challenge."
Oxy will finish its rain-delayed match against The Master's College on campus at the McKinnon Family Tennis Courts on April 9 at 3 p.m. The Tigers lead 4-0 on Feb. 11 when the match was postponed.
