Q: How long have you been playing tennis?
A: Since freshman year of high school.
Q: Favorite moment of your career at Oxy?
A: My favorite moment was this season in a three set match. It was a grueling frustrating match that I ended up winning the last set 6-0. But in the last set I hit shot of my life. She played a ball close to the net and I chopped a short shot with a lot of spin that hit her side and bounced back on to my side of the court which is an automatic point.
Q: What's this season been like having a new coach?
A: Well when I came to Oxy I wasn't on the team. I missed tennis from high school so I signed up for a cardio tennis class. The coach at the time came up to me and asked if I wanted to join the team. So I'm thankful for the previous coach for bringing me on this team. This season with Rachel has been very rewarding. I feel that she pushes and challenges us all to improve and I have really enjoyed it thus far.
Q: What is the team dynamic like this year?
A: Our team is very special because we all love each other. We are all very supportive and it's really nice having such a close bond with each person. It makes the experience much better and is a joy to practice with each other.
Q: What were your tennis goals for your junior year?
A: I wanted to see improvements in terms of my strokes and my techniques and also in my strategy and approach to the game. As a team, we all wanted to have more consistent serves. This team has improved a lot this season. We won many more games against nationally ranked CMS this year than compared to previous years. The quality and intensity of practice with Rachel's knowledge has really helped us grow.
Q: Could you tell us a little more about your extracurricular activities that you've done while at Oxy?
A: I'm currently in training to join Professor Thompson's lab for next semester. I am a health educator for peer health exchange. I am in AXE, the co-ed chemistry fraternity. And I also work games management
Q: Tell me more about what you do with these and what you like about them.
A: For peer health exchange, every week I provide health education for 9th graders in the area for those that don't have that education. I was nervous at first but when I taught my first workshop it was a great feeling. I really missed working with kids and different age groups and I find this opportunity super rewarding.
For AXE, I have been social chair, and alumni chair. I love the people in it, they are easy to get along with and it is so nice to have a group of people pursuing similar academic interests. Helps a lot with school feeling supported academically.
I was super busy my first two years with basketball and tennis but I am much more active now for games management. I love that I get to be at all the games which I would probably be at anyways. I love watching and supporting all of the sports programs at Oxy. The people I work with are incredible.
Q: What are your plans after Oxy?
A: After Oxy, I plan to head back to the east coast, take a year off to work, and study for the MCAT. Then hopefully I will attend medical school and eventually become a surgeon.
Q: What about this career interests you and where do you see yourself in the future?
A: I am a Kinesiology major because I have always been fascinated by the human body. In high school I used to watch videos of surgeries so I shadowed a surgeon and loved it. I find it so awesome what they are able to do. I am not quite sure what specifically I want to specialize in yet.
Q: What do you like about the Kinesiology major and department?
A: My favorite class is Human Anatomy 1 with Prof. Rugg. I absolutely love the way he teaches. Going to his class is such a highlight of my day. I enjoy it because it is so relevant. Because I am an athlete and am in the weight room I can see all these things I'm learning be applied. This is special because I don't think I get these experiences from other classes.
Q: Now for some tough questions. What's your favorite food?
A: "Vietnamese lettuce cup day" at the marketplace is hands down the best you have to try it.
Q: Favorite TV show?
A: Boy Meets World.
Q: Favorite team and player?
A: Boston Red Sox, Xander Bogearts
Q: Favorite band
A: Fleetwood Mac
