LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season against Marymount, 8-1 on Friday.
Against a top-heavy Marymount squad, Oxy picked up the momentum with two wins in the doubles, setting the tone for the rest of the match. The Tigers were able to make more balls than Marymount which was more of a shot-making team that tried to overpower the Tigers throughout the afternoon.
"We weathered the storm and made more balls than they did," said Oxy first year head coach David Bojalad. "I'm very happy with the way we played and excited to watch our improvement as the season goes on."
Wright played incredible defense at the No. 2 spot for a win, absorbing her opponents' attacking pace with some incredible defense off both sides.
Andrea Clawson, the heart and soul of the team, pulled out a tough second set in a tiebreaker against a very crafty and tricky lefty in Isabell Arambuld for an eventual win at No. 3 singles.
Nicole Pelletier was impressive for Oxy with a win at No. 4 singles over Daisy Gonzalez, playing with two hands off both sides, hitting short angles and using the entire court.
Alana Adelman used a good mix of baseline and net play, selectively coming forward to finish points off of the net in a win over Nina Bell at No. 5 singles.
Sydney Leiweke had a great attitude and energy at the No. 6 spot, hitting with good depth off the ground.
Pelletier and Leiweke won at No. 3 doubles.
The Tigers are 1-2 on the season.
Oxy is back in action against Redlands on Feb. 23.
