LOS ANGELES — Hannah Wagner and the Occidental women's volleyball team didn't disappoint in their home opener.
Wagner led all players with 11 kills on .429 hitting, Bethany Heitland made a couple of momentum-changing defensive plays in the second set and Jacqueline Rutherfurd added six kills and three blocks as Oxy beat St. Katherine 25-15, 25-22, 25-16.
Sabrina Degnan had a solid all-around game for Oxy with nine kills, four digs and four assists. Taylor Gorretta added six kills and seven digs, and Allie Sundara had five kills, seven digs and a game-high 23 assists.
Colleen Jones led St. Katherine with nine kills.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 2-3 on the season.
Game 1: Occidental 25, St. Katherine 15
Gorretta, Wagner and Sundara each had three kills as the Tigers won easily in the first set. Sundara added eight assists and two service aces. Sydney Takauye had five digs.
Oxy hit .357 in the set.
Game 2: Occidental 25, St. Katherine 22
Oxy fell behind 9-6 early, letting its play get a little sloppy. The Tigers regrouped after a timeout and countered with a 6-1 lead to jump back in fron 12-10.
With the score tied at 21 later in the set, Heitland made a pair of sliding digs to preserve a rally that the Tigers eventually won with a Wagner kill. Heitland's defense was the key and the spark to Oxy holding off St. Katherine in the second set.
Game 3: Occidental 25, St. Katherine 16
Oxy went on a 6-0 run to take control of the set at 16-11 and never looked back.
The Tigers finished the match on a 15-5 run.
