LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's volleyball came up short in a 3-1 loss to Pomona-Pitzer at Rush Gymnasium on Friday.
The Tigers took the first set, but couldn't sustain their energy over the next three sets.
Taylor Gorretta led Oxy with a game-high 13 kills, Hannah Wagner had 12, and Jacqueline Rutherford and Sabrina Degnan each added five. Allie Sundara had 33 assists, two aces, three blocks and seven digs.
Isabell Kelly had a team-high 12 kills for the Sagehens.
Game 1: Occidental 25, Pomona-Pitzer 19
Oxy won the first game in near wire-to-wire fashion. The Tigers served well, recording four aces. Sundara led the way with two aces, seven assists, two block assists and three digs.
Wagner and Gorretta each recorded three kills.
Julia Zwaal led the Sagehens with three kills.
Game 2: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Occidental 20
A pair of close calls down the line on Oxy attacks went in Pomona-Pitzer's favor and stifled any momentum Oxy tried to generate. The Tigers had to play from behind for most of the set and came up short.
Gorretta had four kills and Wagner had three and a pair of aces for Oxy.
Kayla Krilove led the Sagehens with three kills.
Game 3: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Occidental 19
The Sagehens went on a 12-6 run in the middle of the set to go up 18-12 and never relinquished the lead.
Pomona-Pitzer had 10 kills and just three attacking errors, hitting .250 in the set.
Game 4: Pomona-Pitzer 25, Occidental 19
Trailing 18-13 with their backs against the ropes, Oxy went on a 3-0 run to cut the Sagehens lead to 18-16. Pomona resonded with five of the next seven points, hanging on for the win.
Season Impact: Oxy falls to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer improves to 5-6 and 3-0.
