Cal Lutheran Edges Oxy in Five

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's volleyball team came up a little short in a 3-2 loss to Cal Lutheran at Rush Gymnasium on Friday.

After taking a 2-1 lead with a solid performance in Game 3, the Tigers ran out of gas in the fourth and fifth sets.

Set Scores: 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 25-16, 15-4

Sabrina Degnan led three Oxy players in double figures with 13 kills, and Taylor Gorretta and Hannah Wagner each added 10. Sydney Takauye had 17 digs, Lauren Duffy had five kills and Allie Sundara had 20 assists.

Amanda Roberts led Cal Lutheran and the game with 14 kills. 

Oxy has been close, but not quite over the hump this season. The Tigers have lost four matches in five sets.

The Tigers played their best volleyball at the end of Game 3. Trailing 22-20, the Tigers won the last five points to take the set. Degnan tooled off the block for a kill, Gorretta put one down for a point and then Cal Lutheran was whistled for a blocking error to close the set.

The momentum didn't carry over into Game 4 as Cal Lutheran established control of the match.  

First Match up: Cal Lutheran won the first match between the schools 3-1 in Thousand Oaks.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 7-13 overall and 2-9 in SCIAC play. 

Cal Lutheran improves to 15-9 and 9-4. The Regals have won five in a row and nine of their last 12 matches. 

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action at La Verne on Saturday at 4 p.m.
