Tigers Come Up Short Against CMS

By Kendrick Mooney

WHITTIER – Carly Zurcher and Hi'ipoi Lee each had a goal in the Occidental women's water polo team's 10-2 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at Whittier.

The Tigers were down 2-1 after the first quarter and 3-2 early in the second, but were unable to get much going on offense to keep up with CMS after that. They were shut out in the second half, unable to make up lost ground.

Anna De Groot was outstanding in the goal for Oxy, making nine saves including an impressive five-meter penalty save, and one steal.

One bright spot for Oxy was its 5-on-6 defense, holding CMS to just 2 for 8 on those opportunities. The Tigers defense also did not give up more than three goals in a quarter.

Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 0-2 on the season. CMS improves to 2-0

Next Game: Occidental returns to action Feb. 18 at UC Davis. They will compete in the Davis invitational, facing some of the top teams in the nation.
