Oxy Baseball Beats Castleton, Improves to 8-0

LOS ANGELESJack Brancheau is still on an offensive terror Will Martel, and Tom Butler continued Oxy's trend of outstanding pitching and the Tigers improved to 8-0 with a pair of wins over Castleton at Anderson Field on Sunday.

Brancheau, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., has numbers that are starting to look more like basketball field goal percentages than baseball stats. He's hitting .522, has an on base percentage of .676 and is slugging .870. His hot streak continued against Castleton with a 5 for 8 day, with three RBIs, a home run and a double.

Oxy's pitching has been great so far this season with four legitimate starters in Nolan McCarthy, Will Martel, Tom Butler and Diego Ramirez, and excellent relief pitching through eight games. The Tigers have a team ERA of 1.80.

Game 1: Occidental 6, Castleton 5

With a runner on base, Castleton didn't want to deal with Brancheau or Eamon McNeil in the middle of the lineup so they walked both, but the strategy backfired when they plunked Angelo Zorn with the bases loaded, giving Oxy the victory.

McNeil, Reid Gibbs and Jared Baur all went 1 for 2, and Michael Ingram and Jake Fredrickson were 1 for 3.

The game was only scheduled for seven innings and Martel made sure Oxy wouldn't have to go to the bullpen, giving up three earned runs with five strikeouts for the victory.

Oxy led 3-0 until Castleton took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the fifth and sixth. Baur got the big hit for Oxy, singling in two runs in the bottom of the sixth to put Oxy back in front.

Casleton's Davis Mikell put the pressure right back on Oxy with a solo shot in the seventh.

Game 2: Occidental 5, Castleton 2

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Oxy played small ball to rally for four runs, bunting, advancing runners and putting the ball in play.

Butler was very good in his third appearance and second start of the season, giving up just one earned run with eight strike outs in six innings pitched.

Butler has a win, a save, a 1.06 ERA, and 21 strikeouts in 17 innings pitched this year.

Hirschberg came on to pitch three solid innings in relief, earning the victory.

Antonio Andrade went 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, Bryan Smith went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and a run, and Reid Gibbs was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI.
