LOS ANGELES — Zach Baines led the way with 29 points and nine rebounds as the Occidental men's basketball team improved to 9-0 with an 80-62 win over Principia on Tuesday.
Baines moved without the ball, went to the offensive glass and was effective on both ends of the court, finishing 13 for 20 with four offensive rebounds. On defense he was good coming over to help and challenge shots.
Baines is leading all SCIAC players with 21.6 points per game on 54 percent shooting. Last week he was named the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week.
Austin DeWitz scored 20 points and had seven rebounds, Ryan Kaneshiro had six points, four steals and six rebounds, Jacob Adler was quick to long rebounds and loose balls, finishing with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Jonny Crosthwaite played outstanding defense in 27 minutes after missing most of the Tigers' previous two games in foul trouble.
The Tigers got off to a good start playing some of their best defense of the season, winning the first half 43-22. Principia found a rhythm in the second half, but never cut Oxy's lead to less than 12 points.
Micah Paulson led Principia with 24 points and Trevaughn Good added 18 points and 10 rebounds, slashing to the basket all game.
Season Impact: Oxy is off to a solid start. The Tigers are 9-0 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play.
