LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's soccer team came up a little short in its quest to be the first Oxy squad in program history to win the SCIAC Tournament Championship and advance to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
Tobi Howe scored the game's only goal in th 15th minute and the Tigers fell to the Panthers 1-0 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday night.
Howe received a good cross from Zack Matteoni and headed it back against the grain, near post, for the score.
Oxy had chances throughout the game, but didn't find the goal it needed to extend the game.
It's a bittersweet ending for the Tigers, who finish their outstanding season with a record of 14-6 overall and are the first Oxy squad to advance to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Final.
Oxy was also one win away from clinching a share of its first SCIAC regular season championship when it fell 1-0 in 2OT to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Oct. 27.

Oxy's best chance came to equalize came in the 86th minute. Matthew Labrie put the ball in the back of the net off a throw in, but the Tigers were whistled for offsides.
1st Half Chances
Tobi Howe had the first good opportunity of the game for either team in the 8th minute after a free kick, but his shot from just in front of the goal was saved nicely by Scott Drazan.
Ben Simon had a free kick saved in the 42nd minute from 25 yards out for the Tigers.
2nd Half Chances
Matthew Teplitz had a chance on a counter attack that sailed high of the goal in the 70th minute.
