Men's Tennis Cruises Past Pacific Lutheran

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's tennis team stepped up its game in doubles competition and cruised in five of the six singles, beating Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) 8-1 in a non-conference match at Scholl Canyon on Monday.

Oxy, which was playing its third match in less than 48 hours after having a doubleheader on Sunday, showed no signs of fatigue, improving to 5-7 overall this year. The Tigers have won two of their last three matches and four of their last seven. Oxy, which competes in maybe the best tennis conference in the country, is 4-4 against a solid non-conference schedule.

Oxy No. 1 Josh Dancu, a 2014 First Team All-SCIAC selection, continued to make his case for a regional ranking and a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Nationals with another victory, defeating Sam Stadter, 6-2, 6-0. He also teamed up with Avery Chernin at No. 1 doubles to beat Stadter and Sam Angel, 8-2.

Chernin, a sophomore from Santa Barbara, continues to improve near the top of Oxy's lineup. He won his No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-1.

The most competitive doubles match was a narrow win by Jesse Kreger and Avery Howard over Noel Obteng-Mensah and Jeremy Marsh, 9-7 at No. 2 doubles.

Eric Kazangian and Bryson Lee made it a clean sweep at doubles with a win over James Okubo and Alberto Leal at the No. 3 spot, 8-3.

From the Coach: "We've got a scrappy team that continues to get better each time we take the court," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "Our major improvement at doubles today was a good sign and we're excited about taking on some nationally-ranked SCIAC teams, starting with Redlands on Friday."

Next Match: The Tigers face the No. 18 Bulldogs on Friday in Redlands at 2 p.m.
