NEW ORLEANS — The Occidental men's track and field team is ranked No. 4 in the latest USTFCCCA Team Computer Rankings, released on Tuesday.
"We're humbled by the preseason recognition, but we're a long way from this year's national championships and we've got a lot of work to do if we're going to live up to such a high ranking," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "We're excited for the weeks to come as the championship seasons begin."
Oxy's high ranking is partly due to its success at last year's NCAA Division III National Championship meet. Junior sprinter Hugh Pegan won the national title in the 200m and Oxy's 4x400m relay team of Pegan, Gabriel Barrett-Jackson, Kyle Dalton and Jeh Johnson earned All-American honors. Barrett-Jackson also won his second consecutive All-American honor in the 400m with a fourth-place finish.
Oxy's 4x100m relay team of Pegan, Chris Rom-Toribio, Dalton and Johnson has also had success at the national level. The group collected All-American honors in 2015 and was a national qualifier in 2016.
Oxy high jumper Austin DeWitz is off do a good start in 2017, clearing 6-7.25 at La Verne two weeks ago, putting him in contention to make the trip to Geneva, Ohio later this Spring.
The Tigers are listed behind No. 1 UW-Lacrosse, No. 2 Rowan and No. 3 North Central (Ill.).
