La Verne — The Occidental track and field teams continued SCIAC competition with a multi-dual at La Verne on Saturday. The Tigers scored against University of Redlands and Caltech, and competed against La Verne and Chapman.
The Oxy men and women both went 1-1 with a victory over Caltech and a loss to Redlands.
SCIAC Scoring: The competition counts in Oxy's dual meet record which makes up 25 percent of the overall SCIAC standing. The SCIAC Championship at the end of April determines the other 75 percent.
Recap: On the men's side, Austin DeWitz looked in great form for his first meet of the season, coming in first for high jump and putting up the top mark of the conference this season at 6'5". DeWitz also came in first for the 110h with a time of 16.11. Another highlight in the high jump event came from Zach Baines who got second, only behind teammate and SCIAC champion Austin DeWitz, with a jump of 6'3.5" in only his second competition of his life. Brody Barkan kicked his way to a second place finish in the 800m with a time of 1:56.82, shortly after winning the 1500m.
For the women, Sabrina Degnan had a great all around day in the throws events, coming in first for javelin with a throw of 127'11" putting her first in the conference this season. Degnan also got first in the discus and hammer throw, and second in the shotput. LaShauna Porter moved up to fourth all time in Oxy history in the 100m at 12.21. The 4x100m relay of Naomi Miyamoto, Emma Yudelevitch, LaShauna Porter, and Jada Newkirk ran the fifth fastest time in Oxy history at 49.15. First year, Jada Newkirk, jumped up to 5th in Oxy history in the long jump at 18'1.5". SCIAC champion, Isabelle Dunne, took back the #1 time in the 400h in the conference so far this season with a time of 1:03.39. Melissa Braun also took the #1 spot in the conference in pole vault with a mark of 12'1.5".
