Oxy Track and Field Teams Finish Third at SCIACs

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's and women's track and field teams completed competition at the SCIAC Championships at Redlands on Friday and Saturday.

The men's and women's teams both finished third at the meet and will finish third overall in the conference standings.

Austin DeWitz, Zach Greenleaf and Brody Barkan led the men's team with individual SCIAC Championships. Zach Greenleaf won the pole vault, Austin DeWitz won his second consecutive high jump and Brody Barkan won the 1,500m.

LaShauna Porter and Sabrina Degnan led the Oxy women with multiple All-SCIAC performances. Degnan won the javelin, finished second in the hammer and third in the shot put. Porter ran a leg on the Oxy's SCIAC Championship 4x400m relay, was second in the 200m, third in the 100m and ran a leg on Oxy's third-place 4x100m relay. Porter's time of 11.98 in the 100m beat Oxy's school record of 12.04. Oxy's 4x100 time of 48.09 is second best in program history, just 0.6 off the school record. 

The quality of the meet was very high with men's and women's teams posting great times and marks. 

Pomona-Pitzer won the men's championship and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps won the women's championship.

First Day Highlights: Zach Greenleaf won the SCIAC Championship in the men's pole vault, clearing 16 feet for the win in the event and 10 points for the men's team.

Melissa Braun took second in the women's pole vault, clearing 11-06.5 for eight points.

Jada Newkirk took third in the women's long jump with a mark of 18-06 and Sabrina Degnan took third in the women's shot put with a toss of 37-08.50, both earning six points each. 

Chris Rom-Toribio finished fourth in the men's long jump with a best of 22-08.

In distance events, Eva Townsend was third in the women's 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:32.64 and Austin Sankaran finished sixth in the men's 10,000m with a time of 32:06.78.

All SCIAC: Top three in any individual event earns All-SCIAC honors for the athlete.

What's at Stake? The Occidental men's team is tied for second place after dual-meet competition and the women's team sits in third. A win at the SCIAC Championship for either team will net an overall SCIAC Championship. 75 percent of the overall conference standing is determined at the SCIAC Championships and 25 percent is determined through dual-meet competition.

How the Meet is Scored? The meet will be scored 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 for all events. Nine athletes will advance to the finals in all track events. Nine athletes will advance to the finals in all field events
