Oxy Track Teams Beat Whittier, Caltech

CLAREMONT — The Occidental men's and women's track and field teams both opened their SCIAC season with wins over Whittier and Caltech in SCIAC Multi-Dual action at Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.

"We're pleased to start the conference season with two wins," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "We battled through some bad weather and now we're ready to turn the page, get back to practice and get ready for our next meet."

The SCIAC Multi-Duals account for 25 percent of the overall SCIAC standings with the remaining 75 percent determined at the conference championship meet.

Chapman and Pomona-Pitzer were the other two teams at the competition, but the Tigers only scored against the Poets and Beavers.

With rain falling for the entire meet, times were not particularly impressive for many of the competitors.

Jada Newkirk and Sabrina Degnan led the way for the Oxy women with a pair of individual wins each.

Next Meet: Oxy is back in action at the Oxy Distance Carnival on March 9.
