LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's water polo team lost a close game at Chapman 13-9 on Wednesday night.
Alex Marlott led the Tigers with two goals and two steals, and Hayden Comerford had a goal and three steals. Nicolas Lipari, Cian Concannon, Christian Guillaume, Keegan Klein, Dominic Rios and Nate Fisher rounded out Oxy's goal scorers with one each.
Andy Anguiano and Graham Asalone led the Panthers with three goals.
The game went back and forth throughout with the Tigers taking the lead in the second quarter on a back hand from Concannon on a nice entry pass from Rios.
The Tigers were trailing 8-6 near the end of the third quarter when they drew a penalty. They weren't able to convert though and Chapman scored on the other end, starting a three-goal run that created a small cushion.
Chapman was effective on power plays, converting 5 out of 7, compared to Oxy going just 3 for 8.
"The team played with a high intensity and battled for 32 minutes. We were prepared for their style of play, and knew that we needed to play with intelligence on offense," Oxy head coach Jack Stabenfeldt said. "When we were thorough with our possessions, we created and controlled the game. We got away from our game plan at the end of the third quarter, and they capitalized quickly. I think we're in a great place and doing a lot of things well. We need to refocus and make small adjustments to our decision making for Saturday's conference game at La Verne."
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in SCIAC.
Next Game: Oxy is back in action at La Verne on Saturday.
