CLAREMONT — Sophomore Matt Scarlett won his first collegiate race as the Occidental men's cross country team opened the season with a win at No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.
Scarlett's victory is a positive sign for the talented young runner and a good indicator of his fitness level so far.
"It was nice to see Matt getting the rewards for a summer of hard work," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said.
The teams chose to run a 6k for the competition, 2k less than a normal 8k cross country run.
Next Race: Oxy has two weeks before its next meet at UC Riverside on Sept. 14.
