SANTA CLARITA — Four sophomores and a first year led the Occidental men's cross country team at The Master's Invite in Santa Clarita on Saturday.
The Tigers front pack got lost in the start of the race and had to battle from a long way back. They didn't have enough time to make up the ground they needed to to finish higher.
Tim McClure, one of those four sophomores, finished as Oxy's No. 1, running 25:55 for an overall finish of 33rd in a field of hundreds. The other three sophomores were Matt Scarlett, Charles Sheh and James Brennan, who were two through four. Kent Ford, Oxy's first year, was the fifth scorer behind them.
"It was a good learning experience for a young team," Oxy head coach Rob Bartlett said. "We will use this to make sure we focus on what we need to do to accomplish our goals in the coming weeks."
The Tigers are back in action Oct. 19 at Oberlin College in Ohio.
