LOS ANGELES — The Occidental softball team split its Saturday double header against the Redland Bulldogs in an exciting day of evenly contested softball.

Game 1: Bulldogs 2, Tigers 0

The Tigers fell to the Bulldogs in game one of the double header in a true pitchers duel.

Alexis Funaki had a dazzling performance in the circle for Oxy. The junior from Encinitas, struck out five, allowed only two runs (zero earned) and a mere five hits over seven innings of work.

Samantha Yee finished the game 2 for 2 with a walk, and Cora Roberts and Mackenzie Priley both contributed 1 for 3 games. Ariana Granda was 1 for 2 with a walk.

Funaki's counterpart, Mika Imoto, was equally impressive in the circle for the Bulldogs - allowing no runs and five hits in seven innings of work.

Game 2: Tigers 4, Bulldogs 3

It took 10 innings to decide the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, but thanks to a gritty pitching performance from Dallas Boyce and clutch hitting from Cora Roberts, the Tigers prevailed.

The drama at Bell Field began in the seventh inning, as the Tigers found themselves down three with three outs remaining. Cassie Carter led off the inning with a walk and Roberts followed with a single into center. After a Bailey Stevens ground out that advanced the runners to second and third, Natalie Glover doubled to center, bringing in both runners. The next batter, Mackenzie Priley, smacked a single into left center bringing home Glover.

In the tenth inning, with the international tie-breaker rule in effect, which places a runner on second to start the inning, the Tigers were finally able to edge the Bulldogs. Funaki started the inning with a perfect sacrifice bunt, advancing Samantha Yee, who started the inning on second, to third base. Two batters later, with two outs, Cora Roberts delivered a walk off single to give Oxy its first SCIAC victory of the year.

Dallas Boyce tossed all ten innings for Oxy, allowing only six hits and two earned runs in her outing. Boyce, a senior from Las Vegas, NV, starts off the year 1-0 in conference play and will certainly be a huge part of the Tigers rotation.

Yee and Roberts both finished the game 2 for 5 with a run scored and Natalie Glover went 1 for 3 with two RBI.

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in SCIAC play, while Redlands moves to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Looking Ahead: Oxy takes on Pomona-Pitzer at Bell Field next Saturday (2/24) at 12 and 2 PM.
