Oxy Splits with Cal Lutheran in Home Double

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental softball team spilt in a doubleheader with Cal Lutheran at Bell Field on Saturday, winning 11-3 in Game 1 and losing in a close game 5-4 in Game 2.

Natalie Glover had a big day at the plate, going 5 for 6 with a bases-clearing triple to help Oxy win Game 1, and Cora Roberts hit a Grand Slam in Game 2 that cut Cal Lu's lead to one.

Bailey Stevens also hit the ball very well, going 5 for 6 for the Tigers, along with Kira Elliott, who was 4 for 6.

Oxy first year pitcher Delaney Russell had a good day in the circle, pitching 10.2 innings, with just three earned runs and five strikeouts.

Game 1: Occidental 11, Cal Lutheran 3

After spotting Cal Lutheran three runs in the top of the first, the Tigers rallied for seven in the bottom half of the inning on their way to an 11-3 win over the Regals in Game 1 of a doubleheader at Bell Field on Saturday.

Madison Romero pushed the first runs across the plate with a two-RBI single, Drew Samson singled in a run and then Glover tripled to clear the bases and drive in three runs.

Alexandra Olkein capped the rally with an RBI-single.

Oxy added two more runs in the third and two in the fifth.

Glover finished the game 3 for 3 with the three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base. Samson, Elliott and Roberts all went 2 for 3, Stevens went 2 for 2, and Olkein finished 2 for 4.

Russell was solid in the circle for the Tigers, giving up just two earned runs in all five innings pitched.

Game 2: Cal Lutheran 5, Occidental 4

Roberts hit her first career home run in Grand slam fashion. She got a hold of a pitch in the third inning and blasted it to dead left field, cutting the Regals' lead to 5-4.

The Tigers had their opportunities to get even or potentially go ahead toward the end of the game. They loaded the bases in the fourth, had runners on second and third in the fifth, had a runner on second in the sixth and had a runner on base in the seventh, but each time came up empty.

Stevens went 3 for 4, Elliott was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored, and Glover went 2 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base.

Romero started the game and was charged with the loss after 1.2 innings pitched.

Russell pitched well again, going five more innings with one earned run against her, five strikeouts and no walks.

Olivia Serrano went all seven innings for the Regals, earning the win.

Season Impact: The Tigers record goes to 3-18 overall and 3-9 in SCIAC.

Cal Lutheran goes to 8-14 and 2-8.
