Tsuha's Penalty Puts Oxy in Playoff Position


LOS ANGELESMichaela Tsuha knocked in a second-half penalty kick and the Oxy women's soccer team won its third game in a row and put itself in position to make the four-team SCIAC postseason tournament with a 1-0 win over La Verne at Lower Field on Saturday.

The Tigers now sit in third place at 7-4-1 (22 points) with two games to play. The Tigers can clinch a postseason berth with a win in their next match at Cal Lutheran on Oct. 29 or if Redlands ties or loses against La Verne on that same day.

Oxy finishes the season at Redlands on Nov. 1.

The Tigers have won or tied their last six matches. 

Oxy can still win the SCIAC regular season championship with two wins and two Claremont-Mudd-Scripps losses. The Athenas are in first at 9-3 (27 points). There are also more likey scenarios where the Tigers could finish second and host a home playoff game if they win out.

Tsuha and Julie Khil created several chances throughout the match, but couldn't find the net.

Senior Day: On senior day, Abigail Mitchell and Taryn Ng played outstanding in the back with key tackles and a few blocked shots. 

Stephanie Welty and Katie McDonald also started and played well in their final match at Lower Field.

There was a ceremonial kick off as part of the senior day festivities for Karina Garcia, who suffered a season-ending knee injury after scoring two goals in three games at the beginning of the year.
