LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's soccer moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and maybe more.
Oxy cruised past Caltech 4-0 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday, moving into a tie with Cal Lutheran for third place in the SCIAC standings at 25 points and setting up an important season finale at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at 7 p.m.
If the Tigers tie or win, they earn a spot in the four-team tournament that determines the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.
If the Tigers lose, they will finish tied for fourth place, but will be out of the tournament via relevant tiebreakers with CMS and Cal Lutheran.
Oxy is just one point back of first place, trailing Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands at 26 points. There are a number of scenarios where Oxy could finish as high as first and clinch at least a share of its first SCIAC Regular Season Championship in program history.
Oxy has been in the SCIAC Tournament three times, with its last appearance coming in 2010.
Katherine Kim scored Oxy's first goal just before halftime in the 44th minute. She collected the ball at the top of the box and burried a line-drive shot.
Isabella Bonomi scored Oxy's second goal in the 66th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out.
Layla Devlin scored Oxy's third goal in the 81st minute on a pass from Kialaney Mackey.
Meredith Cook scored Oxy's final goal with just 7.5 seconds remaining in the game, finishing a break away on a pass from Kim.
Oxy's defense got back on track with its 10th shut out of the season.
Oxy improves to 8-2-4 overall and 7-2-4 in SCIAC play.
Caltech fall to 2-13 and 0-13.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
