Tigers Fall in SCIAC Championship Rematch

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Pomona-Pitzer at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday night in a rematch of last year's SCIAC Tournament Championship game.

Oxy's suffers its first loss of the season against a talented Sagehens squad.

Pomona-Pitzer increases its lead on first place in the SCIAC and remains undefeated.

The last time the team's met, Oxy won a road game in penalty kicks, securing its first ever SCIAC Tournament Championship and bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs.

The Tigers weren't so fortunate this time out, giving up two early goals that they couldn't overcome.

Both Brianna Lau and Bria Varnbuhler scored in the first half for the Sagehens.

Varnbuhler leads all SCIAC players with seven goals on the season.

Savana Gonzales had Oxy's best chance to score on a shot from the top of the box in the 38th minute that was punched over the top of the goal by Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Isa Berardo. She also hit a very similar shot early in the second half that Berardo punched off the crossbar.

Chiara Serafini also hit a high hard shot that needed a save for one of Oxy's better looks at the goal in the second half.

It is only the second time Oxy's given up two goals in the past two seasons.

Season Impact: Oxy falls to 6-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in SCIAC.

Pomona-Pitzer improves to 9-0-1 and 5-0 in SCIAC.

Next Game: The Tigers are back in action against Chapman at home on Saturday at 7 p.m.
