LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's tennis team knocked off undefeated Ohio Northern at Scholl Canyon 5-4 on Monday.
"Katie and Jane seemingly get better with every match and continue to gel as an effective No. 1 doubles team," Oxy head coach David Bojalad said. "That's a position that we feel secure about."
The Tigers played strong doubles at all three positions, but the decisive moment of the match came when Nicole Pelletier came up with an ace and two service winners when serving down 6-7, to stay in the match at No. 3 doubles. Pelletier and partner Zoe Campbell carried the momentum into the tiebreaker, without dropping a single point, winning 7-0.
Campbell later clinched the match at No. 4 singles with a tight 6-2, 7-6 victory over Staskiewicz.
"Zoe used her athleticism incredibly well, playing great on all parts of the court," Bojalad said. "I was very impressed how composed she remained in just her second college singles match."
Oxy also had big singles victories from Wright at No. 2 and No. 3 Andrea Clawson. Both of them played big shot makers and did very well fending off their opponents pace of shot.
Wright beat Olivia Schrager 6-2, 6-2 and Clawson took down Kaleigh Cummings with a similar score, 6-2, 6-1.
Despite being hurt, Wolber fought tenaciously to the bitter end at No. 1 singles, dropping both sets in tiebreakers.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 2-4 on the season.
Ohio Northern falls to 6-1.
Next Match: The Tigers travel to Texas to face Schreiner, Southwestern (Texas) and East Texas Baptist during spring break.Follow Oxy Athletics on Twitter Sign Up for Newsletters Watch on Youtube Follow us on Instagram
